“The Heart”

Before we bought our house, we lived in a large rental with a few other people, and I had a spare bedroom to serve as my studio. Outside of it’s window was a gigantic redwood tree, seriously it was over 100 ft tall. Around that same time, a friend of mine was undergoing a triple bypass. I spent a lot of time reflecting on the strength of that redwood. This is an amalgamation of all of those thoughts. If I could redo it, I would transition to the bark better by incorporating the orange and yellow in to it. It might have looked like flames, but that wouldn’t have been a bad symbol to add.

Oil pastel on paper. 2008.
